Do not lose backlinks during the relaunch

Why backlinks are so important

A link from another website is an endorsement. Search engines treat such endorsements as signs of trust and relevance. Many businesses have collected links over the years: industry directories, press reports, partners, associations, blogs.

Find linked pages

  • Google Search Console, Links report: the most frequently linked pages.
  • Backlink tools also provide the linking domains.
  • Own documents: press releases, partner pages, directory entries.

Secure by forwarding

Every linked old address receives a 301 redirect to the content-matching new page. This way, the link remains active even if the linking website is never updated.

Update particularly valuable links

For important partners, a short email with the new address is worthwhile. A direct link is better than one via a redirect—and it remains valid if the redirects are forgotten during the next relaunch.

Printed links are also backlinks in real life

A QR code on a poster or in a brochure is like a link you can no longer change. With a dynamic code, you can centrally update the destination after the relaunch instead of relying on web server redirects.

Frequently asked questions

Does a backlink lose value through a 301 redirect?

According to current understanding, a clean 301 redirect transfers signals largely. Chains of multiple redirects and inappropriate targets weaken them.

What about links to pages that no longer exist?

Redirect them to the most relevant page, such as the category or a successor page. This way, at least part of the value is preserved.

Do I need to contact linking websites?

Not all. Redirects catch most links. Writing letters is worthwhile for the most important partners.
