Shop relaunch: correctly migrate product and category URLs
What changes
Every shop system builds addresses differently. Product IDs, category paths, and variants almost always change when switching. Therefore, a complete list of the old addresses is particularly important here - preferably from the export of the old system.
Assignment by ID
Instead of assigning each address manually, a unique identifier helps: article number or EAN. Through it, old and new product pages can be automatically linked.
- Products: old product URL to the new product URL of the same item number.
- Expired products: redirect to successor or category.
- Categories: to the corresponding new category.
- Filter and sort pages: usually not individually, but for the category.
Do not forget images
Product images bring visitors through image search. If they are now under new addresses after the change, important image URLs should also be redirected.
Packaging and inserts
QR codes on packaging, leaflets, or invoices often point directly to product pages. When switching shops, dynamic codes have a clear advantage: the destination is adjusted in the dashboard, and the already printed goods remain valid.
Frequently asked questions
