What is SEO? Search engine optimization explained simply
SEO in one sentence
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) means designing your website so that search engines can find, understand, and display it high up for relevant search queries – as an unpaid, so-called organic result.
The three pillars
- Technology: The site is accessible, fast, mobile-friendly, and search-engine readable.
- Content: The page answers the question that people type into the search – clearly, completely, and up to date.
- Trust: Other websites link to you, information is documented, imprint and contact are findable.
How Google processes a page
First, Google finds an address, usually via links or a sitemap (crawling). Then it reads the content and stores it in the index (indexing). For each search, it sorts the matching pages according to hundreds of signals (ranking). Each step depends on the page's address – therefore stable URLs are so important.
What small businesses can do immediately
- One page per service with a clear heading instead of everything on one page.
- State your location and service area if you work locally, and maintain a Google Business Profile.
- Write the page title and description so that they invite clicks in the search results.
- Keep addresses stable and forward them cleanly in case of changes.
What SEO is not
SEO is not a trick to deceive Google, nor is it a one-time task. Those who write content for people, keep their technical setup clean, and carefully plan changes like a relaunch have already accomplished most of the work.
Frequently asked questions
Usually weeks to months. New pages must first be found and evaluated; improvements to existing pages often take effect more quickly.
Not for the basics. In the case of a relaunch, a domain migration, or a large shop, professional help is worthwhile because mistakes there can cost a lot of visibility.
No. Ads are paid placements above or below the search results. SEO concerns the unpaid results.
