Codex and Same-QR: Set up MCP and delegate QR tasks to a coding agent
What Codex is
Codex is a coding agent from OpenAI. It works within a project, reads and writes files, executes commands, and handles tasks you describe in natural language. Codex automation does not mean giving up control, but rather delegating routine work and checking the result.
Step 1: Create key
Create a key in the Same-QR dashboard under Account, "Access for CLI, scripts and agents". Make it available as the environment variable SAMEQR_API_KEY.
Step 2: Entry in config.toml
Add this section to ~/.codex/config.toml:
[mcp_servers.sameqr]
url = "https://sameqr.com/api/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "SAMEQR_API_KEY"Codex reads the key from the environment variable; the file only contains its name. Here too, "sameqr mcp" displays the corresponding entry.
Step 3: Test
Ask Codex for a read task: "Show me my Same-QR plan and all QR codes with their targets." Then come write tasks.
Tasks that are suitable
- Create one code from a list of locations and organize it with labels.
- After a change to the website structure, check which codes point to old addresses.
- Write a script that backs up the scan numbers once a month using "sameqr qr list --json".
- Read the menu from a photo for a new gastro customer and create it as a draft.
Decisions with responsibility remain with you: prices on a menu, allergens, deleting codes.
Review results
- View the list of created or modified codes in the dashboard.
- Scan some codes randomly with your mobile phone.
- Read the read-in menus line by line before publishing them.
- Read scripts written by Codex before running them regularly.
Conclusion: why Same-QR
With Same-QR, Codex gets a complete tool for QR codes and hosted pages: three lines of configuration, the same features as in the dashboard, and clear limits that stop an agent in a loop. In every plan and with documentation that an agent can also read.
Get started right away: sign up for free at sameqr.com, two dynamic QR codes are free forever. API, CLI and MCP server are included in every plan, and the documentation is at sameqr.com/entwickler.
Frequently asked questions
Deletion and target changes are only possible with a key that is "full" and confirmation with the previously read state. With "read only" or "read + write", it is not possible at all.
Yes. Codex connects to a key from the dashboard, which you provide as the environment variable SAMEQR_API_KEY.
Everything involving responsibility towards guests or customers: prices, allergens, and the final deletion of codes.
