Claude Code and QR Codes: Set up Same-QR via MCP, step by step
What Claude Code is
Claude Code is a coding agent from Anthropic. It runs in the terminal or in the development environment, reads and edits files, and executes commands. Via MCP (Model Context Protocol), it also uses tools from other services. Connected to Same-QR, it can edit codes, hosted pages, menus, labels, and customer projects in your account.
Step 1: Create API key
Open the Same-QR dashboard account and the section 'Access for CLI, scripts and agents'. Create a key. If you want Claude Code to only evaluate, select 'read only', then the agent will not see the write tools at all. To create, select 'read + write', if it should also change the targets of existing codes, select 'full'. The key starts with sqr_live_ and is displayed only once.
Step 2: Set key as environment variable
Store the key in your password manager and make it available as the environment variable SAMEQR_API_KEY, for example when starting the shell. It has no place in project files.
Step 3: Add MCP server
One command in the terminal is sufficient:
claude mcp add --transport http sameqr https://sameqr.com/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer $SAMEQR_API_KEY"Those who have installed the command line sameqr will also see this line with “sameqr mcp”.
Step 4: Test connection
Start Claude Code and first ask something that does not change anything: “What tariff do I have at Same-QR, and which QR codes are there?” The server recommends that the agent start with this account query so that it knows the limits of your tariff.
Step 5: Codes for a campaign page
A typical task when a new landing page is created in the project:
"Create three dynamic QR codes in Same-QR for the new page /herbst: poster, flyer, and table tent. Attach utm_source=qr and utm_medium with the medium to each target, assign the label Herbstaktion to all, and show me the list beforehand."
After your confirmation, Claude Code creates the codes. Because each promotional medium has its own code, you will later see in Same-QR and in web analytics which medium was used how often. You retrieve the print files as SVG or PDF from the dashboard.
Rights and control
- Always request a list first when making changes to printed codes.
- Changing and deleting targets require confirmation with the read state, maximum 10 per hour. Confirm only consciously.
- If the task should become a repeatable process, have Claude Code write a script with the sameqr-CLI.
- Revoke the key when the project is complete.
Conclusion: why Same-QR
Same-QR fits with Claude Code like a built-in tool: a command for setup, all dashboard functions as MCP tools, read-only keys that hide write tools, and documentation that an agent understands. In every plan, including the free one.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, as an environment variable SAMEQR_API_KEY, which the entry references. The key itself is not in the configuration.
Yes. It can read, modify, and publish hosted pages and import menus from photos. You check prices and allergens yourself before publishing.
MCP is more convenient for tasks in conversation. The CLI is better if it is to become a script that also runs without an agent.
