Cancel QR.io: What happens to printed QR codes?
Dynamic or static: the decisive difference
If you want to cancel QR.io, first distinguish your codes. A static code contains your destination directly in the pattern; it does not need a server or a subscription. A dynamic code contains a short link to qr.io, which is redirected by the server of QR.io. Only dynamic codes can be changed afterwards, and only they depend on the subscription.
You can see what type of code it is in your QR.io account. If in doubt, scan it: If the preview on the mobile phone shows qr.io/…, it is dynamic.
What happens after trial or subscription according to the provider
According to the QR.io pricing page (as of October 2026), there is a trial period of 7 days; afterwards the subscription costs $39.99 per month or $479.50 per year. Without a subscription, dynamic codes become inactive, static ones continue to run. For printed dynamic codes this means: After the end of the subscription, a scan will no longer reach your destination.
| Code type | After subscription according to pricing page | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Static | continues to run | nothing, as long as the destination is reachable |
| Dynamic | becomes inactive | redirect to a new code before cancellation and replace printed materials |
Order: redirect first, then cancel
- Create a list of all dynamic codes with destination and location of print.
- Create a code for each one at Same-QR, the destination is your actual website.
- At QR.io, set the destination of each dynamic code to the Same-QR link as long as the subscription is active.
- Test printed codes, use only Same-QR for new prints.
- End subscription when important prints are replaced.
This way, each printed code redirects via Same-QR until the end of the subscription, and you gain time for the exchange.
The easiest way is the migration assistant under Dashboard → “QR codes” → “Move from another provider”: it reads your list as a CSV or Excel file, lets you assign the columns name, destination URL, old short link and labels, and creates the codes, as many as your plan allows. Afterwards you download a list “old short link → new Same-QR link”, which is exactly what you need for the bridge. An overview of switching is at sameqr.com/wechseln/en.
Continue using static codes
You can simply ignore static QR.io codes after cancellation. They continue to point to their destination. If you own the destination address, such as your website, you can even set up a redirect to a Same-QR link there. This makes a static code controllable afterwards, without reprint.
End subscription at Same-QR
At Same-QR, the end of a subscription is handled as follows: Codes within the quota of your new plan continue to run unchanged – in the free plan, the two oldest. Codes beyond that are deactivated by us only after a 14-day grace period, and you will receive three emails beforehand (7, 3, and 1 day before). Deactivated does not mean deleted: The code shows a notice instead of the destination when scanned and works again as soon as your plan covers it.
All paid Same-QR plans can be cancelled monthly at the end of the billing period, with no minimum term. You can also cancel without logging in via "Cancel contracts here" at the bottom of the website. And two dynamic codes remain permanently free in the free plan, without a trial that expires.

Scan it with your phone camera. If the preview shows an address on qr.io, it is dynamic.
Codes within the quota continue to work; in the free plan, the two oldest ones. Codes above the quota are deactivated after a 14-day grace period and three warning emails, but not deleted, and work again as soon as your plan covers them.
