QRCodeChimp with a custom domain: How to move to Same-QR without reprinting

Why the custom domain makes the move easy

According to the pricing page of QRCodeChimp (as of October 2026), a custom domain is available from the Ultima plan. If you use QRCodeChimp with a custom domain, your printed codes do not contain the provider's short link, but an address like qr.yourcompany.com/…. This domain belongs to you. This means you decide where it points after a move.

This is the big difference to codes with a provider short link: There, the forwarding only lasts as long as the provider executes it. With a custom domain, you can continue after the move without reprinting and without a bridge via the old provider.

What you need before the move

  • A list of all codes with the full path on your domain, for example qr.yourcompany.com/abc123, and the destination.
  • Access to the DNS settings of your domain, i.e., at your domain or hosting provider.
  • A place where forwarding can run: your web space or a forwarding rule at your DNS provider.

The list is the most important thing. If you no longer know which printed code belongs to which entry: Photograph the code and upload the image at Same-QR under “Read a QR image”. Same-QR reads out what is in the code, i.e., the address on your domain. Where this short link forwards to, you can see in the account of your old provider.

Create codes in Same-QR

In the dashboard, under “Many codes at once”, you will find “Import a spreadsheet”. Download the template there, enter your codes and upload the file again. The template has three columns: Name, Target URL and Labels. Comma and semicolon both work as separators; separate several labels with a vertical bar (|). Labels that do not exist yet are created during the import. CSV import is part of the Start plan and above.

The new short links are provided to you by the move assistant after creation as a list “old short link → new Same-QR link”. If you imported via a spreadsheet, “Export all” helps: The CSV has an ID column, and the short link of each code is sameqr.com/r/ followed by this ID. For important codes, you can choose a descriptive link when creating, e.g., sameqr.com/r/menu. It is fixed afterwards.

Forwarding the domain to Same-QR

Same-QR itself does not offer a custom short link domain. Therefore, your domain cannot point directly to Same-QR. Instead, you set up a forwarding for each path: qr.yourcompany.com/abc123 forwards to sameqr.com/r/…. This can be done via a forwarding file on your web space or via forwarding rules that many DNS providers offer.

  • Switch the domain from the old provider to your web space or your forwarding service.
  • Create a permanent redirect for each path to the corresponding Same-QR link.
  • Ensure HTTPS is used so that mobile devices open the address without warnings.
  • Test every printed code.

If you are unsure about this step, ask your hosting provider or your agency. The effort is one-time.

The easiest way is the migration assistant under Dashboard → “QR codes” → “Move from another provider”: it reads your list as a CSV or Excel file, lets you assign the columns name, destination URL, old short link and labels, and creates the codes, as many as your plan allows. Afterwards you download a list “old short link → new Same-QR link”, which is exactly what you need for the bridge. An overview of switching is at sameqr.com/wechseln/en.

After that: Cancel QRCodeChimp in peace

Once your domain forwards to Same-QR, you no longer need the old plan for the forwarding. According to the pricing page of QRCodeChimp (as of October 2026), when falling back to the free plan: All dynamic codes except the last 10 are paused. With a custom domain, this no longer matters for your printed materials, because the forwarding is now under your control.

You can create new prints directly with Same-QR codes or continue with addresses on your domain that you forward yourself. Both work.

All paid Same-QR plans can be cancelled monthly at the end of the billing period, with no minimum term. You can also cancel without signing in via “Cancel contracts here” at the bottom of the website.

At Same-QR, the end of a subscription is handled as follows: Codes within the quota of your new plan continue to run unchanged – in the free plan, the two oldest. Codes beyond that are deactivated by us only after a 14-day grace period, and you will receive three emails beforehand (7, 3, and 1 day before). Deactivated does not mean deleted: The code shows a notice instead of the destination when scanned and works again as soon as your plan covers it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter my own domain at Same-QR?

No, Same-QR does not offer its own short link domain. Instead, you forward your domain path by path yourself to the Same-QR links.

Do I need a web server for the forwarding?

Not necessarily. Many DNS and hosting providers offer forwarding rules. Alternatively, web space with a forwarding file is sufficient.

Does my QRCodeChimp subscription have to run until the end?

No. Once your domain forwards to Same-QR, the printed codes are no longer tied to the old provider.

Can I take my old scan statistics with me?

Generally no. Save the statistics before cancellation with the old provider, as far as they offer an export. In Same-QR, the count begins with the first scan via the new code.
