Connect a subdomain for QR codes: step by step with TXT and CNAME

For your own domain in a QR code you need two things: access to your domain’s DNS settings and a plan that includes custom domains. The steps below follow the flow in the Same-QR dashboard; the principle is similar with other services.

Step 1: Choose the subdomain

Pick a short name in front of your domain, such as qr.yourcompany.com or scan.yourcompany.com. The subdomain must not already be used for something else, for example a mail system or a shop.

Step 2: Enter it in the dashboard

In the dashboard, open the “Own domain” tile, enter the subdomain and click “Connect”. You will see two values: a name such as _sameqr.qr.yourcompany.com and a value that starts with sameqr-nachweis=.

Step 3: TXT record as proof

At your domain provider, create a new DNS record of type TXT. Many interfaces only want the part in front of your domain as the name, so _sameqr.qr. Paste the copied text as the value. Save, wait a few minutes, then click “Check” in the dashboard. From now on the subdomain belongs to your account; nothing changes for your links yet.

Step 4: Switch the CNAME

The service now shows a CNAME. For qr (or your subdomain), create a record of type CNAME with the target kunden.sameqr.com. If there is already an A or CNAME record for this subdomain, replace it. If you use Cloudflare for DNS, set the record to “DNS only” (grey cloud). Then click “Check status” until it says “Active”. The service gets the https certificate itself, usually within a few minutes.

Step 5: Create and test the first code

When creating a QR code, pick your domain in front of the “Displayed link” field instead of the default address. Below the form you see the final address, such as qr.yourcompany.com/menu. Download the code and scan it with two different phones before printing.

Common pitfalls

  • Name doubled: some providers append the domain automatically. If the field already contains qr.yourcompany.com, you end up with qr.yourcompany.com.yourcompany.com.
  • Checked too early: new records sometimes need a little time. Better wait ten minutes than click ten times.
  • Old record overlooked: two records for the same subdomain do not work together. The old one has to go.

Yes, ideally. It does no harm and keeps showing that the domain belongs to your account.

How long does it take overall?

Usually less than half an hour. How quickly new records become visible depends on your domain provider.

Which plan do I need?

At Same-QR, Gastro Pro or Marketing Starter and above.
