QR code on your own domain: qr.yourcompany.com instead of a provider link
Every dynamic QR code contains a short address. A scan goes there first and is then forwarded to the actual destination. With most services this address belongs to the provider, for example provider.com/r/abc. With your own domain, your address is in the code instead, for example qr.yourcompany.com/menu.
What your own domain gives you
- Independence: the domain is yours. If you switch services later, you change one DNS record and printed codes keep working.
- Trust: many camera apps show the address before opening it. Your own name looks more familiar than an unknown short-link domain.
- Readability: an address such as qr.yourcompany.com/menu can be printed under the code and typed in if needed.
- Consistent branding: website, print and code carry the same name.
How it works technically
You use a subdomain of your website, such as qr.yourcompany.com. At your domain provider you add two records: a TXT record that proves the domain is yours, and a CNAME record that points the subdomain to the QR code service. The service then gets a certificate itself so that the address works with https. Your website at yourcompany.com is not affected.
New codes and old links
On the connected domain you create new QR codes, with a path you choose, such as /menu, or a random one. If you already used the domain with a previous provider, the new service can also answer the old paths, as long as it knows the list from the move. Then nothing needs to be reprinted.
What to check before printing
- Test first, then print: scan the finished code with two phones before the run goes out.
- Choose the path deliberately: what is in the code is fixed afterwards. Short, lower case, no special characters.
- Keep the domain: as long as codes are in circulation, the subdomain must stay connected. Do not let the domain lapse by accident.
What it costs at Same-QR
At Same-QR, your own subdomain is included from Gastro Pro and Marketing Starter, with no extra charge per domain. You connect it in the dashboard under “Own domain”.
Frequently asked questions
No. You only need access to your domain’s DNS records. The QR code service answers the requests.
Usually not, because your website lives on the main domain and a CNAME cannot be placed there. A subdomain is the usual way.
The service’s own address works in parallel. The print, however, only contains the address you chose when creating the code.
