QR code for your menu: created automatically when you publish

Bild von Unsplash

Previously, it took two steps: build and publish the menu, then create a QR code in the “QR codes” tab and point it to the page. Many users struggled to find this second step. Now Same-QR handles it automatically: when a menu or any other page goes online for the first time, it automatically receives its QR code. It appears directly in the page settings, ready to download and print.

What happens on first publication

As soon as you tap “Publish” and the page is online, Same-QR creates a dynamic QR code:

  • It is named after your page and points to its address.
  • If the page belongs to a business or client project, the QR code is stored there.
  • It is only created if no QR code currently points to this page. Duplicate creation is not possible, even with a double-click.
  • When you later publish changes or take the page offline and back online, no additional QR code is generated.

Because the QR code is dynamic, you can change the menu as often as you like afterward. The printed pattern remains valid.

The “Your QR code” card

In the page settings, you will find the “Your QR code” card. There, you have everything in one place:

  • a preview of the QR code
  • “Download” as PNG, SVG, or PDF
  • “Print file”: a CMYK PDF for the print shop
  • “Print” directly from the browser
  • “Open in code list” for destination, labels, and appearance
  • the number of “Scans total”

Older pages that do not yet have a QR code display the “Create QR code” button here.

Printing a QR code: which format for what

FormatFor what
SVGGraphics software, layout, scalable to any size without quality loss
PDFPrinting in the office or sharing with a graphic designer, also vector-based
Print template (PDF, CMYK)Print shop: Table tent, poster, paper menu
PNGScreen, website, Instagram, Word document

SVG and PDF consist of vectors, which is why the edges remain sharp even on a poster. A PNG is a pixel image and becomes blurry when scaled up significantly. Print shops work with CMYK, which is why the print template is created in this color space.

Printing tips

  • Leave a margin: The QR code needs a light margin without text or patterns around it, known as the quiet zone.
  • Dark on light: A dark code on a light background is read most reliably.
  • Better larger: Guests scan from arm's length at the table and from a few meters away in the window display. The farther away, the larger the code must be.
  • Test before printing: with two or three different phones, including an older one, and in low light.
  • Check the goal: Scanning should open your qr code menu directly, not a login page.

If your quota is full

The Free plan includes one dynamic QR code, while Gastro Starter includes three. Once all are assigned, Same-QR cannot create any more. The page will still go live, and the “Your QR code” section will display: “Quota reached – point an existing code to this page or change your plan.”

Using “Choose an existing code” and “Point to this page”, an existing QR code will then point to the new page. This also applies to any code already printed with this pattern. Same-QR therefore asks beforehand. Alternatively, you can switch to a larger plan.

Conclusion

Menu ready, QR code ready: Upon first publication, Same-QR creates the QR code, and in the “Your QR code” card, you can download it as an SVG, PDF, or CMYK print file. You can start for free at sameqr.com; a dynamic QR code is permanently free.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to create the QR code for my menu myself?

No. Upon first publication, Same-QR creates it automatically, provided no QR code currently points to the page and your quota has space.

Which format do I need for the print shop?

The “Print file”, a PDF in CMYK. SVG is suitable for graphic design software.

Does the QR code change if I edit the menu?

No. The QR code is dynamic and always points to the current version of your menu. You do not need to reprint it.

What happens if I have no more free QR codes?

The page will still go live. You can point an existing QR code to it or switch your plan.
