Edit QR code: change the destination later without reprinting
The question almost always comes up after printing: Can I still change the link behind the QR code? The answer depends on the type of QR code on the paper. With a dynamic QR code from Same-QR, you change the destination in a few seconds, and every printed code immediately leads to the new address.
Is this even possible?
A static QR code contains the destination address directly in the pattern. It cannot be changed, only reprinted. A dynamic QR code contains a short address from Same-QR that redirects to the actual destination when scanned. You can replace this destination at any time; the pattern remains the same.
There is an exception in Same-QR as well: For the Wi-Fi QR code with “Connect directly”, the network name and password are in the pattern so that the phone can connect without detours. If the password changes, you must reprint.
Change the destination in three steps
- 1. Open the “QR codes” section in the dashboard and select the QR code.
- 2. Enter the new address in “Destination URL”.
- 3. Save. From now on, every scan leads to the new destination, even from long-printed flyers and posters.
In the Free plan, you can change the destination twice per QR code; in the paid plans, as often as you like. Once the changes are used up, the QR code remains scannable and continues to lead to the last destination.
Target history: back to the old target
Every change is recorded in the “Target history” of the QR code. It shows which target was active at what time, with the “original target” marked. Use “Back to this earlier target” to restore a previous target, for example if a promotional page should point back to the homepage after the promotion ends.
Changes made via connected apps or API keys are also recorded in the target history and can be reverted there.
Switch target by time
Sometimes a QR code should point to different targets at different times: the lunch menu at midday, the dinner menu in the evening, and brunch on weekends. For this, use the time-based control, available from Gastro Pro and Marketing Pro:
- You create rules, for example Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 14:00.
- The first matching rule takes precedence, from top to bottom. If none match, the default target applies.
- Times spanning midnight are also supported, for example from 22:00 to 06:00. Daylight saving time is handled automatically.
- “What applies when” shows you the next few days, so you can verify everything is correct before saving.
Does the QR code point to a Same-QR page?
If you built your menu or link page with Same-QR, you usually don’t change the target but the page itself. You edit prices, opening hours, or links in the “Menus” section or on your page. The QR code remains unchanged.
If a target leads nowhere
If the page behind a QR code no longer exists, the dashboard warns you with “Destination unreachable.” You then redirect the target to a suitable page before guests or customers encounter an error page. A typical trigger is a website relaunch, where URLs change.
Conclusion
A dynamic QR code can be changed after the fact without reprinting a single flyer: enter the target, save, done. The target history records every change, and the time control switches the target based on the time of day. You can start for free on sameqr.com; a dynamic QR code is permanently free.
