TXT record as domain verification: why services ask for it and how to set it

Google Search Console, email providers, shop systems and QR code services often ask the same thing: please add this TXT record. It looks like a hassle, but there is a good reason for it.

Why proof is needed

If a service simply accepted any domain entered, someone could claim other people’s domains. With QR codes, the worst case would be scans on your domain ending up with someone else. Only you can change your domain’s DNS records, though. If the required value is there, it is clear the domain is yours.

What a TXT record is

TXT stands for text. The record contains any string and has no effect on your website or email. Services only read it. That is why an additional TXT record is harmless, even if you already have others, for example for SPF.

How to create it

  • In your domain provider’s DNS management, create a new record of type TXT.
  • Use the name exactly as the service gives it. For sub-names such as _sameqr.qr usually without your domain after it.
  • Paste the value by copying, do not type it. Most interfaces add quotation marks themselves.
  • Save and only click “Check” at the service after a few minutes.

Checking whether the record is visible

A public DNS lookup tool in the browser tells you whether the record can already be seen: enter the name, choose type TXT, run the query. If the value appears, the service can read it too. If nothing appears, it is usually the name, or it needs a little more time.

Can I delete it afterwards?

Many services check only once. Still, leaving the record in place does no harm. It documents which account the domain belongs to and saves guesswork if it is checked again later. At Same-QR, the domain belongs firmly to your account after verification.

Frequently asked questions

Will a TXT record affect my email?

No. An additional TXT record under its own name changes nothing about email delivery or your website.

Why can the service not find my record?

Usually the name is doubled (domain appended twice) or the record has not propagated yet. Check the name first, then wait a few minutes.
