Use Google Search Console correctly during the relaunch
Before the relaunch
- Confirm the website, preferably as a domain property that covers all variants.
- Export performance report: Pages and search terms with clicks and impressions from the last few months.
- Report "Links" secure: the most frequently linked pages.
On the go-live day
Submit the new XML sitemap and test some important new pages with URL inspection: Is the page indexable, is the correct canonical address recognized? In the event of a domain change, additionally report the address change.
In the weeks that followed
- Report on page indexing: Check pages not found (404) and excluded pages.
- Performance report: Compare clicks and impressions with the period before the relaunch.
- Pages with redirects: Do the targets match?
What the Search Console does not show
Printed links and QR codes rarely appear here because they do not originate from Google search. They require their own monitoring, such as scan counts and nightly target verification from a dynamic QR code service.
