How many scans does a QR code need? Estimating your needs honestly

A QR code costs nothing extra to print. With dynamic QR codes, however, every scan counts, because every scan passes through the provider’s redirect. That is why many free plans limit the number of scans. Before you choose a plan, one simple question is worth asking: how often will my code actually be scanned?

The simple calculation

The number of scans depends on three things:

  • how many people see the code
  • what share of them actually scan
  • how often the same person comes back

Nobody knows the share in advance; it depends on the place, the occasion and the text next to the code. So calculate with a cautious assumption and check it in the first month.

Examples with assumptions

Where the code isAssumptionScans per month
Business card50 cards handed out a month, one in five is scannedabout 10
Flyer2,000 flyers, 2 in 100 are scannedabout 40
Menu on the table40 guests a day, every second one scans, 26 opening daysabout 520
Shop window300 passers-by a day, 1 in 100 scans, 30 daysabout 90
Poster for a festival800 guests, a third scan the programmeabout 270
The shares are assumptions for the calculation, not measured averages. Your own numbers may differ considerably.

The examples show a pattern: codes on printed matter that gets handed out bring few scans. Codes in places where people need something, such as the menu on the table, bring many.

Measure instead of estimating

After the first month you no longer need an assumption. A dynamic QR code counts its own scans. Give each place its own code and you will see which one is used how often. Pay attention to how your provider counts. At Same-QR the same internet connection counts at most once per minute for the same code, and link previews from messengers do not count. So the number reflects real people and not repeated camera attempts.

What happens above the limit

More important than the limit itself is what happens afterwards. Some providers stop redirecting, others show ads. The free plan of Same-QR includes 1,000 scans a month for the whole account. Above that, the codes keep working at first, but the note “Made for free with Same-QR” appears for about two seconds before the destination. If the account stays above the limit for more than seven days, the codes show only a notice until the end of the month. Three emails come before that, and everything resets with the next month.

When unlimited scans are worth it

If your calculation is permanently above 1,000 scans a month, for example for a busy restaurant or a campaign with many posters, a plan with unlimited scans is the calmer choice. If it is below, as with business cards, flyers or a club notice, a free plan serves you well.

Conclusion

Most QR codes are scanned less often than people think. Calculate roughly with the number of people who see it and a cautious share, give each place its own code and look at the real numbers after the first month.

Frequently asked questions

How many scans does a QR code get on average?

There is no reliable average. The number depends heavily on where the code is and what it is needed for. A code on a menu is scanned far more often than one on a flyer.

Do the 1,000 free scans apply per QR code?

No, to the whole account. All QR codes together have 1,000 scans per calendar month.

Does my QR code stop working when the limit is reached?

Not immediately. First a short note appears before the destination. Only if the account stays above the limit for more than seven days does the code show only a notice until the end of the month.
